A child's illness always represents a destabilizing event in the family balance, starting with the loss of everyday life involving mom, dad, siblings, grandparents. Oncohematological illness takes on even more important aspects and for quite some time disrupts the life of the child or young person, which is regulated only by treatments and hospitalizations.
At such times the whole family must be helped to face trials that require great courage and heavy sacrifices.
UGI volunteers have been facing this disease for more than 40 years by placing themselves next to the young patient and his or her parents, supporting them in all ways: in presence during hospitalizations in the ward; providing financial aid when necessary; contributing to scientific research and the treatment of pediatric cancers; and offering free hospitality at Casa UGI to those who come from outside Turin and need lodging near the hospital. In addition, with the start-up of UGIDUE in 2020, it offers out-of-care patients and their families a dedicated space to be able to recover that psychosocial dimension that is fundamental for the return to a normal daily life, accompanied, if necessary, also in psychomotor rehabilitation paths in the UGIDUE gym.
The proceeds will support the "Sport with UGI" project, which kicked off in 2018 with the creation of the 100% UGI Torino Team, in collaboration with Regina Margherita Hospital and Torino Fc, composed of girls and boys out of therapy, and then expanded to become a wide-ranging tool for reintegration through motor rehabilitation. At a time when, for several months, the boy's daily routine is regulated by hospitalizations and heavy therapies, play and sports movement take on a fundamental role, allowing children and adolescents to return to win a future for themselves. With many activities that UGI makes possible outdoors and inside the rehabilitation gymnasium.
Childhood cancer requires a great choral effort.
It is won together, wholeheartedly: a blue heart of hope.
